Your vehicle's road tax may have changed since you last checked or taxed it.
Vehicle road tax (VED) is now calculated using a specific range of factors across emissions, fuel type, age, and value. Here's what changed this year and what it could mean for your charge.
From 1 April 2026, the standard minimum tax rate for petrol, diesel, and hybrid cars registered after 1 April 2017 has risen to £200.
If your vehicle's list price exceeded £40,000 when first sold, you may be liable for the Expensive Car Supplement — an extra £440 added to your annual VED for five years.
Electric cars no longer qualify for free road tax. Electric and hybrid cars with a list price over £50,000 also qualify for the Expensive Car Supplement.
You will need a reference number from either of these documents:
You must tax your vehicle. This legal requirement applies even if you're exempt from payment.
Whether or not a charge applies to your vehicle, UK law requires every vehicle kept or used on the road to be taxed. Renewing or registering your vehicle tax is done directly and officially at gov.uk — we explain the current rates above so you know what to expect before you go.
This website provides a fully comprehensive vehicle report (a VR5 Report) as part of which identifies the cost of the road fund license for your vehicle and the payment options from the DVLA. This site is not the DVLA and the VR5 Report you purchase is not a process to tax your vehicle.
Other important items inside the VR5 Report are present vehicle tax and MOT status, if the vehicle has been stolen, written off, had engine changed, or re-sprayed.
Importantly when taxing your car, the VR5 Report identifies any previous changes to the vehicle registration.
Please note: The VR5 Report you are purchasing is an information service. This site is not the DVLA and the VR5 Report you purchase is not a process to tax your vehicle.
